Rubellite, a red tourmaline, is the rarest gem in the tourmaline family. Its dark pink to red color is due to trace amounts of manganese. Notable mining sites include Afghanistan, Brazil, and the United States. The gem forms from groundwater that settles into igneous rocks and is often found in pegmatites. Rubellite is commonly treated with heat and radiation. It shares its lush, dark red coloring with ruby and red spinel, and has often been mistaken for ruby. It is an 8th anniversary gem and specifically commemorates the 5th anniversary.
